Argumentation and debate are YouTube spectator sports these days – you might almost say blood sports, as aggression and an uncompromising winner/loser mentality are often the order of the day. But there’s more to an argument than just beating the opponent.

The “winner” in an argument may really be the loser, if they emerge without having had their certainties challenged or opinions reshaped. And there’s a fascinating sense in which argument – done properly – can really be about beneficial mutual exchange and trust.
